A good thing about having us three sisters together, was someone was always taking a picture. So beware this post is picture heavy.
Since my family was here for a week we thought that it would be fun do a little getaway while they where here and so we decided to take them to NOLA! Its about a 6-7 hour drive. Glad we have our van to fit everyone!
Road trip!
Marilyn's brother in-law served his mission here and told her of some things she needed to do. So we made a pit stop at a gas station in Scott, Louisiana to eat Boudin (a weird sausage that they told us not to ask whats inside) and craklins (pig skin), look at alligator heads, and talk to the local natives/cajuns. Boy they're accents make it hard to understand!
When I see this picture I can't help but smile at the sleeping photo bomb from Tanner, as well as to sing the song that we would always perform growing up from the movie White Christmas "Sisters, Sisters there were never such devoted sisters..."
We made it into town Thursday evening and had to take them to one of Brad's and I traditional food places; Oceania off of Bourbon Street in the French District.
Friday was a busy day! We started out the day by eating some beignets. You can't go to New Orleans and not go to Cafe du Monde. Its a NOLA classic!
and oh my goodness! Tanner was hilarious. When we got to Cafe Du Monde, Tanner started crying because he was so hungry so Brad and I ordered about 12 beignets. Six to a plate. When we got the food and passed it out Tanner was still crying. We couldn't understand why, until he told us he wanted the plate with ALL the beignets, not just the one beignet we gave him. He scarfed them down! Hungry boy!
Love Jacksons square!
The Great Mississippi River
We then went on a ferry ride across the Mississippi
The kids loved riding on a boat
We then walked around the historic district on the other side of the Mississippi and found a statue of the one and only Louis Armstrong (the boys are pretending to play the trumpet)
After the ferry ride back we hopped on the trolley to take a ride through the beautiful garden district. We all picked which beautiful southern houses we would want to live in.
Then that night it was girls night! Brad and unfortunately Katherine took the kids back to the hotel so we could enjoy some good ol' fashioned jazz at the infamous Preservation Hall.
Waiting in line. Mom and Marilyn checked out the voodoo store across the street and got a couple souvenirs.
The music, as always, was superb! At the very end they even played "When the saints go marching in" so that means someone must have tipped them $20 to play it. And those with instruments that could, marched around the tiny little room clapping and hollering. It was great! The saxophone player was my favorite and he allowed me (the birthday girl) to get a picture with him!
Then another one of Marilyn's bucket list was to go to an oyster bar. She got a little more then she wanted and tried to get my mom and I to have one, but I tried an oyster the first time I came to this town and did not like it. So my mom and I watched with disgusted horror as Marilyn sipped those down. Gross! We then walked back to the hotel and passed all the antique shops that we wished were still open for us to look at.
It was a quick weekend trip, but before we went home we got Lavender Honey Ice Cream at the Creole Creamery and a visit to a NOLA cemetery. This has now been my 3rd time to this city, and I finally made it to see one of these famous grave sites.
It was eerily beautiful
We had a wonderful trip! Full of lots of good cajun food, jazz, and fun. New Orleans was a place that both Katherine and Marilyn have always wanted to go and I think the girls liked it!
