Logan had an incident in school involving a teacher. It was really heartbreaking and infuriating and I’m praying this teacher will do better in the future towards students.
Logan came home bawling after school. He said it was the best day and then turned into the worst day. After he calmed down I was finally able to get a clear explanation of what happened. He said that he ended up as the special student of the day in his class. His teacher gave him a sucker for being such a good student that day. After school while waiting in line for the bus, the 2nd grade bus monitor teacher (not Logan’s teacher) ripped the sucker out of his mouth. Logan said his mouth really hurt and when I looked inside I could tell that the top two permanent teeth had chipped enamel. I was furious. I immediately called the school and the front office told me to leave a message with the Vice principal, which I did. I also sent an email to Logan’s teacher explaining what happened.
You could tell there must have been some communication first between parties before I got their replies because they were both hours later and at the same time 😆. Both explained their shock and sadness and I had a meeting with the principal first thing in the morning. Logan’s teacher even said that she had given permission to have that sucker and she knows how excited he was.
It was a busy morning for the school as it was field day, I was sitting in the lobby waiting for the principal and the teacher who assaulted Logan rushed out of the room visibly angry/embarrassed and you could tell just had a stern talking too. It was a little awkward seeing her, but she rushed right past and so it was very quick. Then it was my turn to meet with the principal. I must say I was very impressed. She’s new to our school, just started after the Christmas break when our old principal moved due to her husbands job. She was very apologetic and reiterated that what that teacher did was absolutely in the wrong. They looked at the security tapes and the principal said Logan was in line and behaving like he was supposed to and the other teacher just walked by, no words spoken and just ripped it out. She said it did look forceful and can understand how that could cause damage. She said the teacher will be disciplined but did not say how. The teacher was also removed from the bus monitor position so Logan wouldn’t have to see her. She also said they wanted Logan to see the school councilor because “they broke Logan’s trust and now they need to gain it back”. “How even though it’s the end of the school year and everyone is tired that it is their job to keep the kids safe and feeling loved.”
The principal also mentioned that this was very uncharacteristic of this teacher who has taught for 25 years. However I’ve heard from multiple parents and those who work at the school that this teacher has had many complaints and is a very rude/harsh teacher. I think it might be time for her to retire…
I thought the meeting was handled very well and I appreciated everything the principal said and I knew she was on my side. I asked about paying for any dental costs and she said she would bring it up with the district. However 2 months later and a follow up email, I have yet to hear back on that. Logan has a dental appointment this summer and after I met with the dentist about his teeth will determine how I proceed with that.
The night of the incident Logan kept saying how he didn’t want to go to school, he didn’t want to see that teacher, and he didn’t want to ride the bus. It broke my heart. However after talking with him it seemed the next day he had no problems or anxieties about going to school. He met with the councilor at the school and that went well, although Logan didn’t really say much about what she said.
The principal has been very nice and goes out of her way to say hi now like when she saw me at the celebrations of learning and graduations. Friends and even Brad has said I’ve been too nice over this and should have raised hell. But I think it was handled well by the school, well see what the dentist says about Logan’s teeth though, I may need to come back and revisit this again soon…
*it’s hard to take a good picture of teeth, but if you see in the above picture the darkened spots circled in red that is the chipped part. Luckily it didn’t chip the bottom edge of his teeth. It just got the enamel, but gosh dang it these are permanent teeth 😫
